About the Role

The Mechanical Fabricator / Welder performs hands-on welding, metal fabrication, machining, mechanical repair, and technical support for U.S. Navy engineering and test operations, including Surveillance Towed Array Sensor System-Expeditionary (SURTASS-E) equipment. This role supports the fabrication, modification, testing, maintenance, and operational readiness of mechanical components, specialized equipment, and associated support systems.

What You'll Do

  • Perform hands-on welding and metal fabrication, including cutting, grinding, fitting, layout, alignment, tack-welding, assembly, and repair of metal components and equipment.
  • Prepare, position, clamp, align, and secure materials and components for welding, fabrication, machining, repair, and mechanical assembly.
  • Perform machining, mechanical repair, modification, and support work on equipment, components, test hardware, fixtures, tools, and related support systems.
  • Program, set up, and operate CNC equipment, manual mills, lathes, saws, sanders, grinders, drills, presses, plasma cutters, and other mechanical or pneumatic shop equipment as required.
  • Plan machining and fabrication work by reviewing work orders, blueprints, engineering drawings, sketches, specifications, material requirements, machining parameters, and geometric dimensions and tolerances.
  • Set up mills, lathes, and related shop equipment by installing and adjusting chucks, tools, attachments, collets, bushings, stops, fixtures, stock, and work-holding devices.
  • Perform cutting, drilling, turning, facing, grooving, threading, grinding, fitting, and related machining and fabrication operations.
  • Use precision measuring and gauging equipment, including calipers, micrometers, depth gauges, indicators, rulers, and squares, to verify dimensions and workmanship.
  • Inspect machine settings, first-run parts, sample workpieces, welded assemblies, and finished components for compliance with drawings, specifications, and quality requirements.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, machining, fabrication, and operational problems and assist with corrective actions.
  • Repair, rebuild, overhaul, and modify manufacturing, service, test, shop, and support equipment using technical drawings, manuals, instructions, and engineering guidance.
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on shop equipment, machinery, mechanical support equipment, tools, and related systems.
  • Support prototype development, equipment modification, mechanical design, 3D printing, drafting, CAD/CAM, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and similar engineering activities as required.
  • Maintain production records, maintenance logs, inspection reports, quality documentation, equipment status updates, and related records.
  • Monitor inventory of materials, tools, shop supplies, replacement parts, and support equipment.
  • Coordinate with engineers, technicians, logistics personnel, and operational staff to resolve equipment issues and support operational readiness.
  • Support equipment preparation, transport, setup, inspection, inventory tracking, and recovery for Navy engineering and test operations.
  • Bid and proposal support if requested.
  • Other duties as assigned.
